ATHLETICS

1981 was another year of mixed fortunes for school athletics. There were some excellent individual performances at The Kent Championships but the overall standard of the various age group teams was not high. The U15 team managed second place in The South-East Kent Championships but had they all competed with determination they could easily have won. The U14, 15 and U16 combination managed to win The Powell Trophy and indeed the U16 team did well to finish the season undefeated. The Open team won The Seven Schools meeting but were well beaten by Tonbridge, Sutton Valence and King's Canterbury. Unfortunately, The Duke of York's Cup was "flooded" off, so they had no chance to gain their revenge at home. The U17 team lost to Tonbridge but they had a good win at Kings and several of their members gained good results at The Kent Schools Championships. Undoubtedly the weakest teams were the U13's and U14's who are probably the poorest we have had for some time. Let's hope they have been working on the Multi-Gym!

Throughout the season, only three school records were broken - Nigel Jackson in the U13 discus, Robert Turner in the U17 Hurdles and David O'Hara in the Open 2000 metres Steeplechase.

Colours were re-awarded to the captain Mark Geldard and newly awarded to Chris Barlow and David O'Hara.

12 - 13 Boys: Nicholas Mumford 1st

14 - 15 Boys: Michael Bates 1st
Tuah Jenta 1st

CYCLING

Last year the new school sport of cycling was introduced into the school. A small club was formed and mainly concentrated on cycling touring. Two members of the club actually joined The British Cycling Touring Club. The major problem with this activity has been the lack of storage room for the bikes - the house cycle sheds are now used as dustbin shelters!

David Happy rode in the French Randonee de la Cote d'Opale back in September finishing third out of the British contingent. It is hoped that after the school external exams this summer, a small party will be able to go on a cycle tour of Normandy, based at the rustic village of La Croupte, where one of the member's fathers has set up a small Auberge for cyclists.
