2nd Fifteen

The 2nd Fifteen had an exceptionally successful season, losing only two of their eleven matches. The team, ably led by Dave McCauley, played an exciting blend of attacking rugby, and everybody immensely enjoyed the season which culminated in the rugby dinner.

The atmosphere which prevailed throughout the season was relaxed enough to make all games fun, and serious enough to enable us to win so many matches. The Wolfe House front row of Dave Martin, Dave Cullen and Keith Raynor provided a strong foundation for the pack. Mark Watkins and Dave McCauley proved their lineout strength and were very capable, Mark Watkins moving up to the 1sts for two matches. The back row partnership of Russ Lancaster, Dieter Cottrell and Barry Clarke was effective in the loose play and many tries came from scrummage ball.

Paul Murphy and Mark Jackson both played in the difficult scum-half position and served the line (Paul Stubbs, Daryll Head, Richard Moon, Julian Richards and Greg Davies) with ample second phase ball which they put to good use, running well and keeping the ball in play. Peter Kelly played in a number of positions and enjoyed a season in which his kicking ability proved to be vital.

The "group" atmosphere was strong within the side and teamwork was in evidence in most matches. Captain Dawson gave us all sound encouragement and even a drop of home brew after our last game! Fifth formers Mike Eastwood and Chris Bourne also played well and Mike even managed to score a drop kick which took the team by surprise.

The team really enjoyed the season and also thank Messrs. Buck and Crisp for their efforts.

3rd Fifteen

The 3rd Fifteen had, what must have been, one of the most successful seasons for many a year, ably led by Paul Bush. Of the seven recorded matches played, 4 were won and 3 lost, though the points scored were a better indication of their success: for 137; against 33. Twenty of the points against came in the first game of the season, against King's, Canterbury, who were the only side to score more than one tri against us all season.

Under 15 Rugby

A good season on the whole where victories outnumbered defeats. More important the boys played with enjoyment and brought credit to the school with their sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Much of the credit must go to an excellent captain, John Norton (Wellington) who had the respect of all his team-mates and always led by example.

RUGBY SEVENS

After a very good season for the first fifteen, things looked promising for the 7's team.

BUT apart from the Streatham/Croydon Sevens tournament, the members of the squad had little to show. Perhaps infrequent practice sessions and erratic attendance were the reasons for the downfall of the team. At Rosslyn Park a promising start faded away leaving us in tatters. At Oxford, bad luck was the culprit, as little would go our way.

The younger members of the squad gained useful experience and next season looks a bit brighter. The "squad" was:- C. McConchie, M. Geldard, S.R-Holmes, D. Richardson, A. Bennett, A. Marsh, C. Davies, D. O'Hara, M. Watkins and M. Jackson.
