SKIING 1981

A party of 45 (41 boys, 2 parents, 1 relation and 1 staff) spent a very enjoyable holiday at Fiesch (in the Valais Canton of Switzerland) in the Feriendorf Centre. The Centre is a purpose built International Youth Centre catering for children/students and providing education/sporting facilities in winter and summer.

Daily routine was soon established:-

8 to 9,000 ft. up;
2 hrs/day Swiss instruction (in English, French and German).
2 hrs/day Self help instruction
2 hrs/day optional free skiing.

Meals were "continental". They were very good indeed, very satisfying and there was always plenty of it.

All inclusive cost is £175 (travel, board and lodging, hire of equipment, ski lessons, ski-lift insurance), which is superb value as good snow is guaranteed.

Plans are underway for a trip again this year but costs are now approaching £200 and are possibly more.

OUTWARD BOUND - ABERDOVEY

This year saw a substantial improvement in the achievements of boys from the school. Contrary to popular belief, we were to find (as the warden stressed at the start of the course), that the Outward Bound experience is second to none.

The aim of the Outward Bound course is not to physically exhaust all candidates, but to create situations in which team work, understanding and self-control are vital.

The range of activities offered to us was extensive and included expeditions, climbing, water-work and co-ordination activities. Each individual activity emphasised the importance of team work and this was reflected in the social atmosphere within each group, which was very satisfying.

It provides an opportunity for people of varied backgrounds such as: Police cadets, technicians, students and foreigners to mix and appreciate customs and life-styles of other candidates.

Despite the mental and physical exertions, people were inspired by the continual challenge which the course provided, and boys from the school generally seemed more capable, owing to the strength of their characters, to lead and organise group tasks.

We were all overwhelmed by the bonds of friendship formed and the complete satisfaction we had gained from the course, that we highly recommend Outward Bound as a chance not to be missed.
