WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS OF STAFF

We are pleased to welcome the following members of staff who joined the school staff in September.

Mr. S.A. Bird hails from Northwood, London. He was educated at The John Lym School, Harrow, from where he went to The University College of Swansea to read English. After taking his degree, Mr. Bird then recrossed the Severn and took a P.G.C.E. (post-graduate Certificate of Education) at The College of Saint Mary and Saint Paul, Cheltenham. As well as being a member of the English Department, Mr. Bird is also Deputy Housemaster of Haig House. He declares his interests to be music, opera, theatre and cooking.

Next we come to Mr. David Tuddenham who, by coincidence, was also educated at The John Lym School, Harrow. This is an independent school for approximately 450 boys, much the same as The Duke of York's. Mr. Tuddenham's home base is in Pinner. After 'A' levels, he became a student at King's College, London where he read Chemistry. After gaining his degree he remained at Kings to take his P.G.C.E. His interests are chess and model-railway.

Mr. C.W.W. Wilson, who was born in Worcestershire in the lovely Malvern Hills, is no stranger to boarding school life. He began boarding at his preparatory school, Abberley Hall when he was 8 ½. From there he went to Monkton Combe School near Bath. After 'A' levels, he became a student at Exeter University reading history. On leaving Exeter, he did a one year P.G.C.E. at The University of London Institute of Education. His main interest outside the classroom is in music.

Mr. A.J. Sleight has joined the Physics department. Born in Devon, he was a pupil at Brigg Grammar School in Lincolnshire. He was a student at The Nottingham College of Education. Before coming to the Duke of York's, he taught for six years at The Royal Wolverhampton School. Mr. Sleight is married with one son. His main interests are aero-modelling, swimming and hockey.

FAREWELL

C.S.M. JACK FORREST

One of the men who had come to be regarded as something of a permanent fixture of the school retired at the end of the summer term 1981. An unmistakable figure left us for what we hope will be a long and happy retirement in his native and beloved Norfolk. Jack Forrest could rightly be described as one of the "old school" of soldiers, having joined the army before the outbreak of The Second World War. Naturally he joined the Norfolks, a proud member of a proud regiment. Unfortunately he spent a good part of his war in the infamous Changi Jail as an unwilling guest of the Japanese.

He had been C.S.M. at The Duke of York's for twenty years. He was very popular with bots and staff, not only for the tasks he was paid to do on the military side and with the shooting, but for the other numerous contributions he made to the life of the community. He helped many a sixth former through the dreaded L-test, as well as teaching countless boys how to shoot. He served as Chairman of the Staff Common Room and for some years he was the mainspring of the organisation which put on the annual extravaganza, the Christmas Draw. He was a man of unfailing good humour and common sense.

Jack was fortunate in the support he was given by his wife Nora who made her own special contribution to so many aspects of school-life, most obviously by being a popular matron to the boys of Marlborough House. We also extend a very warm welcome to the new C.S.M. from the Royal Engineers, C.S.M. Whitehouse and hope his time here will be both enjoyable and fruitful.

Michael Walkington

We also said goodbye this year to Michael Walkington, who joined the school in September 1978 to be deputy housemaster of Haig House and to teach in the English department. He came to us straight from Nonnington College and left in July 1981 to join the Royal Army Education Corps. He was a very conscientious member of staff both in the classroom and also on the junior playing fields. He also helped in the organisation of C.C.F. activities. We wish him all the very best in his new career.
