The start of a new academic year began for us, five days earlier than timetabled when we travelled up to Beaconsfield as guests of the R.A.E.C. Here we spent four days of intensive fitness training to compensate for the hectic early term programme and to the coaches this potentially, looked like being a better season than previous ones, in terms of style of play, commitment and results.

The season began with a "best-forgotten" draw in Ipswich, with us dominating but with no points. But a style of play evolved, initially dependent on our small but strong and compact forwards. Injuries plagued us for most of the early games, but we managed to beat a King's School, Canterbury side 14 - 3 and Sutton Valence 24 - 7.

Chatham House caused problems with their fierce tackling and strong pack. With Dean Richardson, Al Black and Mike Tinsley all out with injuries, the game would obviously be a struggle.
